JANUARY NEWSFLASH

Dear Fellow Warriors,

Welcome to the new running year 2024, and our new newsletter that we hope to publish regularly.

First point is to all members to please remember to register both with the club as well as with CGA/ASA.

With this done, we will receive the 2024 License numbers sometime soon. These need to be worn on the front and back of your club colours kit. Age tags need to be worn front and back of club colours kit order to be eligible for any prizes or podium finishes. More of this will be reviewed.

Your committee has been working hard already to ensure that we offer you, our members the best service possible, from tents at race events, to fun family day experiences, to organised out of town races like Loskop. We will be rolling out a Calander of events in due course to ensure you can plan your running year, and with 40 of our members already signed up for Comrades, we are looking forward to great turnouts at all of the events. Remember, you only get out of the club what you put in, so I do ask that each of you do try to attend a few of the events and start to get to know your fellow club mates. Time Trial is a key part of this. Time Trial should be seen as the most important day of the running week – this is the key to gaining fitness, improving your times, as well as socialising with members from all levels and abilities. We are quite unique in the area, catering for both Morning and Evening Runners, with 2 official timed events taking place every Thursday at Beverly Avenue Park.

The only thing we ask of you as members is that you assist us during our Race Weekend. We deliver a world class event every year, hosting the Edenvale marathon, together with our major Sponsor, StaminoGro. In order to do this, and thereby also sponsor all of the activities we do as a club, we ask for your time and assistance during the weekend of 2 and 3 March. The biggest assist is Marshals, we will be reaching out for marshals soon, please ensure your availability. This is our chance to give back to the running community and our club, while having fun on the road side.

I trust you enjoy our new newsletter, and at last, give Simon Evans’s Dad something to read again.

If you would like to submit an article, or picture or any news items etc, please feel free to email it through to admin@randroadwarriors.co.za . We welcome your input and suggestions etc to ensure we are meeting your expectations.

Yours in Running

Embarking on the Journey of Running: A Step Towards a Healthier You

Starting to run is not just a physical activity; it’s a journey towards better health, mental well-being, and self-discovery. Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning after a hiatus, lacing up those running shoes marks the beginning of a transformative experience.

1. Setting Realistic Goals: Begin with achievable goals. Don’t aim for a marathon right away; start with a brisk walk-jog routine. Setting realistic milestones ensures a smoother transition into running and minimizes the risk of burnout or injury.

2. Investing in the Right Gear: While you don’t need the most expensive gear, investing in a good pair of running shoes is crucial. They provide the necessary support and cushioning, reducing the impact on your joints. Comfortable clothing and moisture-wicking fabric also contribute to an enjoyable running experience.

3. Gradual Progression: Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is your running endurance. Begin with a combination of walking and running, gradually increasing the running duration as your stamina improves. This approach prevents overexertion and fosters a sense of accomplishment.

4. Listening to Your Body: Pay attention to your body’s signals. It’s normal to experience some discomfort, especially in the initial stages, but persistent pain may be a sign to ease up or consult a professional. Rest and recovery are as crucial as the running itself.

5. Consistency is Key: Building a running routine requires consistency. Set a schedule that aligns with your lifestyle and stick to it. Whether it’s morning runs to kickstart your day or evening jogs to unwind, making running a regular part of your routine enhances its effectiveness.

6. Variety in Terrain and Intensity: Mix up your running routine by varying the terrain. From pavement to trails, each surface challenges different muscle groups. Similarly, incorporating intervals of speed or hill training adds variety and boosts overall fitness.

7. Fuelling Your Body: Running demands energy, so fuel your body with a balanced diet. Hydration is also crucial; ensure you drink enough water to replace fluids lost during your runs.

8. Celebrating Achievements: Every run, no matter how short, is an achievement. Celebrate your progress, whether it’s running a longer distance, improving your pace, or simply sticking to your schedule. Positive reinforcement keeps you motivated.

9. Connecting with the Running Community: Joining a running group or connecting with fellow runners online provides a sense of community. Sharing experiences, tips, and challenges fosters motivation and a sense of belonging.

10. Embracing the Journey: Running is not just a physical activity; it’s a journey of self-discovery. Embrace the solitude of solo runs or relish the camaraderie of group sessions. Allow running to become a meditative space where you can reflect, recharge, and grow.

Embarking on the journey of running is more than a fitness choice; it’s a commitment to your overall well-being. With patience, consistency, and a positive mindset, you’ll not only witness physical transformations but also experience the joy and fulfilment that running brings to your life.
